More time on task is central to the success of S.A.C. Prep’s students. Students attend school from 7:45 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Thursday and from 7:45 am to 2:30 pm on Fridays. Students have time after school to meet with their teachers during their “office hours” and get help with their work from other students.
Students are required to attend Saturday school once a month. Eight hours/day during the week, three and one half hours one Saturday/month, and starting before Labor Day enables S.A.C. Prep students to achieve remarkable academic and social progress.
The focus for the early grade levels is to help students develop strong foundational computation skills. As students continue to build their number sense, more conceptual problem-solving skills are developed. The goal is for all of our students to be proficient or advanced in high school algebra by the time they graduate 8th grade.
Students spend at least 1.5 hour a day, 4 days a week, dedicated to English Language Arts. While the curriculum is standards-based, there is an additional emphasis on developing strong vocabulary skills, reading comprehension skills, and writing skills.
Students develop knowledge and proficiency in science through an understanding of the scientific method, the inquiry process, and the periodic table. Students observe demonstrations, conduct labs and take field trips to build a strong base for science.
Students develop an ability to identify cause and effect relationships in history, and ability to compare and contrast, and the ability to accurately identify historical events and historical figures in their appropriate time period.
At S.A.C. Prep, results matter. The graph below represents student achievement for the 2007-08 and 2008-09 school years. These gains represent the largest single year gains in the school district (SCUSD).
S.A.C. Prep is also focused on closing the achievement gap. The chart below shows the overall growth in student achievement – as measured by the Academic Performance Index (API) – from 2007 to 2008. The data below clearly shows the significant progress made towards closing this gap.

Schoolwide Growth – 26 Point Gain
Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Gain – 39 Point Gain
(API Scores: African Amer. Achievement – S.A.C. Prep vs. Neighborhood Middle Schools)
